Carney, who compiled an overall record of 33-28 at the school, finished 4-6 this season after posting consecutive 8-2 finishes.
The Bulldogs were Sunshine State Athletic Conference division champions in 2014 and 2015, and qualified for the playoffs in both seasons. Berean finished third overall in the league last year.
Carney cited a desire to spend more time with his family as his reason for stepping aside.
“My stepson Jared Hammond graduates from Berean in May,” said Carney, who works for the Palm Beach County School District Police. “I would like to be able to enjoy that.”
Carney began coaching at Berean as an assistant in 2008 before being promoted to head coach in 2011. He said he enjoyed his tenure there.
“I think that the staff that I was able to put together was very special, and fit the types of players we had very well,” he said. “Both my assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Jack Doucette, and my line coach Mike Pignato were excellent at working with inexperienced players.
“We were also able to maintain a faith-based, high-character environment that certainly helped us.”
Carney said he would consider coaching elsewhere in the future.
The school will begin a coaching search shortly, Carney said.
