This week’s top games:
No. 1 Dwyer (2-0) at No. 9 Suncoast (4-1), 7:30 p.m. Wednesday: The Panthers are coming off a pair of big wins to open the season – the first against district rival and No. 10 Royal Palm Beach, and the second a 77-46 rout of Fort Lauderdale in the Kreul Showcase on Saturday. Tommie Luke and Miles Coleman have formed a potent scoring duo for Dwyer, which has an athletic, deep bench to go along with its talented starting five. The Chargers were hit hard by graduation, but have reloaded and expect to challenge for the district championship. Suncoast opened the season with an impressive win over 4-1 Orlando-Olympia at the Charger Classic, and followed with three more wins before falling on a buzzer-beater to Cardinal Newman Saturday.
Boca Raton (3-2) at No. 2 St. Andrew’s (6-0), 7:30 p.m. Wednesday: FSU-bound combo guard Anthony Polite and the Scots have rolled to start the season, winning their first six games by an average of 27 points. St. Andrew’s earned a 46-point win over Fort Lauderdale Saturday in the Kreul Showcase in Coconut Creek, with 11 Scots players contributing offensively. The Bobcats got off to a rocky start, dropping two of their first three games and struggling with turnovers and shooting. But Boca Raton righted the ship last week, winning consecutive games to move over .500. Guards Maxime Demeus (14.8 ppg) and Cade Long (15.4 ppg) pace a Bobcats offense that can shoot from anywhere on the floor.
Palm Beach Lakes (2-1) at No. 3 Cardinal Newman (4-0), 7 p.m. Saturday: The unbeaten Crusaders have gotten off to a quick start, with senior guard K.J. Fitzgerald playing a leading role. Fitzgerald, who eclipsed the 1,000-point career scoring mark as a junior last season, has continued to pour it on offensively for Cardinal Newman, which won its fourth game Saturday with a 62-60 win over No. 9 Suncoast. The Rams have their own standout guard in senior Lavorris Givins, who helped carry Palm Beach Lakes to consecutive wins after it dropped its opener to No. 10 Royal Palm Beach. The Rams play in a tough district, but expect to be in the middle of the championship race.
