Vera has taken a job as a physical education teacher at The Greene School in West Palm Beach, and also will serve as an assistant boys varsity basketball coach at Cardinal Newman.
He said Tuesday he made the move for family reasons, and also for the opportunity to work with Crusaders’ head coach Tavarus Harris.
“After the birth of my daughter, I really wanted to step back from the head coach scene and join Cardinal Newman,” he said.
“It’s such a great opportunity. T Harris is a young coach, like myself, and I feel with the combination of us two, the possibilities are endless. Joining a really historic program like Cardinal Newman is really exciting.”
He also looks forward to joining the staff at The Greene School, which opens this fall.
“It’s a chance to be part of something new and innovative in the country,” he said.
Vera, 26, was a dean and also a social studies teacher at Forest Hill, where he has spent the past three years.
The Falcons boys varsity team was his first head coaching position.
Much of his staff was composed of former Palm Beach County high school basketball players. Vera played high school basketball at Park Vista, and went on to play in college at Palm Beach Atlantic.
Vera and Forest Hill athletic director Ron Kotouch spearheaded a fundraising drive last year for a new weight room at the school.
During his three years as coach, the Falcons’ boys basketball program raised more than $100,000 for the school.
“I’d like to think I kind of started momentum to change Forest Hill, to kind of bring it back to the glory years,” Vera said. “I know the success may not have reached on the court just yet, but I think that we set the foundation for the future.”
A search is underway for a new head boys basketball coach, Vera said.
