Last weekend was a busy one for boys basketball, as numerous area teams took part in holiday tournaments.

Spanish River and Suncoast both hosted tournament competition over the weekend, with nearly a dozen local teams participating.

Grandview Prep won a pair of games at the Charger Classic in Riviera Beach, beating Lauderdale Lakes-Boyd Anderson 76-54 and Tampa-Jefferson 74-25. The Pride play a big non-district game Wednesday against 2014 Class 4A state finalist Cardinal Newman. More on that game below.

Wellington, Suncoast, Spanish River and John I. Leonard also won tournament games over the weekend.

Boys basketball Top 10 after Week 2:

1. Grandview Prep (3-0): Two wins at Charger Classic
2. Boca Raton (3-0): Fast start for Bobcats
3. Wellington (1-1): Alex Dieudonne averaging 22.5 pts.
4. Dwyer (2-1): Overtime win over Royal Palm Tues.
5. St. Andrew’s (4-0): Scots allowing just 29.5 points per game
6. Cardinal Newman (1-0): Crusaders play No. 1 Grandview Wed.
7. Suncoast (2-1): Chargers split pair of tournament games
8. John I. Leonard (2-1): Sophomore guard Jerquan Worthen leading the way
9. Royal Palm Beach (1-1): Wildcats face No. 3 Wellington Wed.
10. Park Vista (3-0): Cobras 1-0 in district play

Games of the Week:

No. 6 Cardinal Newman (1-0) at No. 1 Grandview Prep (3-0), 6 p.m. Wednesday: This non-district contest pairs two of the area’s top teams, and promises to be an intriguing one. The Pride, coming off a pair of big wins at the Charger Classic last weekend, have a talented roster headlined by Northeastern-bound Shawn Occeus, senior center Kenneth Nwachukwu and senior guard Juwan Frazier. The defending regional champion Crusaders counter with heavily recruited junior point guard KJ Fitzgerald and senior guard Scott Perry. Both teams hope to advance deep into the postseason, and this will be an early test for both.

No. 4 Dwyer (2-1) at Jupiter (1-3), 7:30 p.m. Wednesday: The Warriors have gotten off to a slow start this season, but have plenty of size and a talented guard in senior Jake Dawkins, who averaged 10 points and six rebounds last year. The Panthers dropped a district game to Palm Beach Lakes last week, and then needed overtime to beat Royal Palm Beach, another district rival. But Dwyer has a solid mix of veterans and newcomers on its roster, and will look for contributions from all of them this season. The Panthers play four consecutive games on the road beginning with this contest.

No. 9 Royal Palm Beach (1-1) at No. 3 Wellington (1-1), 7:30 p.m. Wednesday: The Wolverines were turnover-prone during their first two games, committing a total of 42 in a loss to Miami-Norland and a win over Deerfield Beach-Zion Lutheran. But Wellington had a solid second half against Zion Lutheran on Saturday, and will look to continue that momentum against the Wildcats, who split a pair of district games to open the season. Royal Palm has plenty of young talent, with juniors Jules Jasmin and Leonard Thorpe, Jr., leading the way. The Wildcats expect to contend for the District 13-7A championship.

FAU picked up a commitment from one of the area’s top defensive backs Tuesday, landing Oxbridge Academy junior Traivon Leonard.

The 6-foot, 170-pound cornerback helped lead the ThunderWolves to the District 7-3A championship this season and a berth in the Class 3A regional finals.

Oxbridge finished 9-3 in its first year of FHSAA district play.

“It’s a great situation for both FAU and Traivon,” ThunderWolves coach Doug Socha said. “He wants to be part of building that program.”

Leonard, who also has a South Alabama offer, joins a long list of Palm Beach County athletes who have either committed to or signed with the Owls since Charlie Partridge took over as coach two years ago.

Those players include quarterback Daniel Parr (Dwyer), defensive back Kemar Downer (Palm Beach Central), Athlete J’Quan Napier (Palm Beach Gardens), defensive back Jalen Young (Seminole Ridge) and quarterback Raymond Rizk (Pope John Paul).

2016 American Heritage linebacker Lawrence Graham committed to FAU in June, while several other 2016 Big Board players have received offers from the school.

Leonard finished the season with 33 tackles and three interceptions.

Three days of rain led to numerous cancellations and postponements, with some teams completing one or two games and others not finishing any.

The top 10 changed with Benjamin’s loss to Jupiter on Tuesday. Unbeaten Oxbridge Academy maintained its No. 1 spot, while Boca Raton, American Heritage, Park Vista, West Boca Raton and Jupiter all moved up.

Here’s the girls soccer top 10 after Week 6

  1. Oxbridge Academy (5-0-3): Earns 1-1 tie with American Heritage
  2. Boca Raton (12-1): Bobcats post a pair of shutouts
  3. American Heritage (4-1-2): Stallions unbeaten in District 13-2A
  4. Park Vista (8-1): Cobras rained out last week
  5. West Boca Raton (10-1): Bulls continue to roll
  6. Jupiter (10-2-1): Warriors upset Benjamin
  7. Benjamin (7-1-2): Bucs play Wellington Tues.
  8. Palm Beach Central (8-2): Broncos shut out Somerset Canyons

The Pride and Bobcats, with identical 5-0 records, remain No. 1 and No. 2 in this week’s Top 10. The Scots (7-0) maintained their No. 5 spot, one position behind 5-1 Dwyer and two behind 4-1 Wellington. The Bobcats play the Wolverines Wednesday night in an intriguing non-district contest. More on that game below.

Suncoast, Cardinal Newman, John I. Leonard, Royal Palm Beach and newcomer Palm Beach Lakes round out the final 5.

Boys basketball Top 10 after Week 3:

1. Grandview Prep (5-0): Pride continue fast start
2. Boca Raton (5-0): Bobcats 4-0 in district play
3. Wellington (4-1): Wolverines have won four in a row
4. Dwyer (5-1): Beat Deerfield Beach at Kreul Classic
5. St. Andrew’s (7-0): Scots winning by an average of 28 pts.
6. Suncoast (4-1): Christoff Nairn leading Chargers
7. Cardinal Newman (2-1): Crusaders fall to No. 1 Grandview Prep
8. John I. Leonard (4-2): Lancers win two-of-three
9. Royal Palm Beach (3-2): Jules Jasmin leading the way
10. Palm Beach Lakes (5-2): Rams 4-1 in district

Games of the Week:

No. 6 Suncoast (4-1) at No. 7 Cardinal Newman (2-1), 7 p.m. Tuesday: The Chargers have gotten off to a fast start, winning four-of-five games to open the season. Their only loss was a 74-70 double-overtime decision to unbeaten Miami-Central at the Charger Classic Nov. 28. Senior guard Christoff Nairn has led the way on offense for the Chargers, who are averaging 71.2 points per game. The Crusaders have played just three games so far, opening with a pair of wins against Greater Miami Academy and Atlantic Christian, and falling to No. 1 Grandview Prep. Junior guard Kaleb Fitzgerald has been a standout so far for Cardinal Newman, averaging 29 points. These teams met last year at Suncoast, with the Crusaders winning by 14.

No. 2 Boca Raton (5-0) at No. 3 Wellington (4-1), 7:30 p.m. Wednesday: This non-district contest features two of the area’s hottest teams. The Bobcats are unbeaten to start the season, and are winning by an average of nearly 19 points per game. Boca Raton has scored 73 and 70 points, respectively, in their last two games and are getting balanced offensive production. But the Wolverines will be a big hurdle. The defending Class 8A state champions dropped their opener to Miami-Norland, but have been on a roll since. Wellington has won four straight, including a pair of wins against teams ranked in the Post’s top 10. Senior swingman Alex Dieudonne (16.8 ppg) and junior guard Trent Frazier (20 ppg) have gotten off to tremendous starts. Expect to see plenty of them here.

No. 10 Palm Beach Lakes (5-2) at No. 4 Dwyer (5-1), 7:30 p.m. Thursday: This is the second meeting between the Rams and Panthers, who each have one loss in District 13-7A. Palm Beach Lakes won the first contest 66-63 Nov. 21 at home, and Dwyer will be looking to even the series. The Panthers have been on a roll since falling to Palm Beach Lakes, winning four in a row. Dwyer has averaged 76 points during that span, and has gotten great production out of senior Thomas Agnew, junior Tommie Luke and sophomores Eddie Davis and Miles Coleman. The Rams also are playing well, winning four of five. Their one loss in that span came to 5-1 Fort Lauderdale-Westminster Academy.

The North-South All-Star Football Classic is one of the oldest high school All Star Games in the country, beginning in 1949.

Volleyball: American Heritage earns FHSAA academic award

The American Heritage girls volleyball team was named an Academic Team Champion by the Florida High School Athletic Association for Fall 2015-16.

The Stallions hold the highest cumulative grade point average among all Class 4A volleyball programs at 3.795.

Just three other schools in all class levels for volleyball had higher averages. They are Class 7A Tampa-Plant (3.830); Class 5A Orlando-Bishop Moore (3.815); and Class 2A St. Petersburg-Keswick Christian (3.825).

“American Heritage has long set the standard for excellence both in academics and athletics in Palm Beach County,” Stallions coach Tricia Couch said. “With an unprecedented number of scholar-athletes to graduate last year and attend college, it was no surprise that this year’s volleyball team was no exception.”

“Receiving this award is a great honor,” added senior outside hitter Caroline Rapp. “Our team this year made it very far in both our academic and athletic pursuits. We were able to set a good example as a team of what it means to be a student-athlete.”

American Heritage finished 17-8 and advanced to the Class 4A regional quarterfinals this season.

State champion Lake Worth Christian was sixth among Class 2A schools with a GPA of 3.663.

Suncoast’s boys golf team also was named an Academic Team Champion, compiling a cumulative grade point average of 3.762.

The FHSAA Academic Team Champion recognition program honors teamwork not only in competition, but also in the classroom. The program recognizes teams in each of the Association’s sanctioned and recognized sports, naming an Academic Team Champion in each classification.

Each classification’s individual sport winner receives a commemorative plaque.

For overall classification winners, the top 10 schools in each category receive points. Ten points are awarded for a first-place finish, nine points for second, etc. The school in each class with the highest cumulative point total for the entire school year will get a special award. Points awarded for teams in single-class sports will still count toward the overall standings.

With 17 points, American Heritage is seventh overall among all Class 4A schools following the fall sports season. Other area schools ranked among the state’s best are: Suncoast (31 points, Class 5A); St. Andrew’s (eight points, Class 4A); King’s Academy (six points, Class 4A); St. John Paul II (two points, Class 4A); FAU (13 points, Class 3A); Lake Worth Christian (six points, Class 2A).

Santaluces linebacker Zach McCloud is headed to UM after all.

The four-star recruit, who decommitted from the Hurricanes Nov. 12 following coach Al Golden’s dismissal, announced through Twitter Friday night that he had committed to UM following an official visit to the school.

“I’ve known for a long time where I wanted to be,” McCloud said Friday. “I just kept my thoughts to myself, and tonight felt like a good time to let everyone else know. I’m glad to be back home.”

McCloud, who is the No. 2-ranked player on PBgametime’s 2016 Big Board, is rated the 11th-best outside linebacker in the 2016 class by 247Sports and 13th by ESPN. Rivals has him as a three-star and 54th at his position.

He plans to enroll in January.

Isaiah Johnson will not be wearing a Florida uniform this fall.

The Dwyer wide receiver announced through Twitter Sunday afternoon that he was decommitting from the Gators.

Johnson, a three-star recruit who is ranked No. 5 on PBgametime’s 2016 Big Board, holds numerous Division I offers, among them Illinois, N.C. State and Washington State.

Florida is the third school to whom he has committed, and then decommitted, during the past year.

He originally committed to Louisville last December, and then flipped his commitment to Miami in February. He decommitted from UM March 15, and then announced his commitment to Florida five days later.

Johnson, 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, took an official visit to UF on Friday.

He finished the 2015 season with 800 receiving yards and nine touchdown catches.

Johnson’s decision capped a busy weekend for Palm Beach County football recruits. Santaluces linebacker Zach McCloud committed to Miami on Friday, and Glades Central running back Ja’kevious Vickers and Oxbridge Academy tight end/linebacker A.J. Garson followed with commitments to Connecticut on Sunday.

No. 1 Grandview Prep and No. 4 St. Andrew’s remain unbeaten, while No. 2 Wellington and No. 3 Dwyer combined to win seven games last week.

New to this week’s poll are Santaluces, which has won 7-of-8 games and holds the No. 7 spot, and Lake Worth, which has won three straight and is ranked No. 9. Suncoast, Palm Beach Lakes and Cardinal Newman also are ranked this week.

Boys basketball Top 10 after Week 4:

1. Grandview Prep (7-0): Pride continue to roll
2. Wellington (7-1): Big wins over Boca Raton, Bartow
3. Dwyer (9-1): Panthers have won eight straight
4. St. Andrew’s (10-0): Scots edge No. 7 Santaluces
5. Boca Raton (6-2): Bobcats are 6-1 in district
6. Suncoast (5-2): Chargers split pair of games
7. Santaluces (7-3): Chiefs make top 10 debut
8. Palm Beach Lakes (7-3): LaVorris Givins leading Rams
9. Lake Worth (7-4): Trojans have won three straight
10. Cardinal Newman (2-2): Kaleb Fitzgerald averaging 29 points
Also considered: John I. Leonard (5-3); Royal Palm Beach (5-3)

Games of the Week:

No. 5 Boca Raton (6-2) at John I. Leonard (5-3), 7:30 p.m. Monday: The Bobcats slowed a bit last week after opening 5-0, dropping consecutive games to No. 7 Santaluces and No. 2 Wellington. But Boca Raton and its talented stable of shooters rebounded Friday, earning a key district win over Park Vista. The Lancers will be another important district test for the Bobcats, who have a pair of players averaging 16 points per game in Morgan Zook and Austin Aubrey. John I. Leonard, which was ranked for the first two weeks of the season, counters with sophomore guard Jerquan Worthen (17.5 ppg) and senior forward Greg Metellus (16 ppg), who have helped carry the Lancers offensively this season.

No. 3 Dwyer (9-1) vs. Miami Christian (6-3) at Kreul Classic, Coral Springs, 9:15 p.m. Friday: The streaking Panthers draw the state-ranked Victors in holiday tournament action this weekend. Miami Christian, ranked No. 4 in Class 2A, has split its last four games, with the two losses coming by a combined six points in tournament play. Dwyer has won eight straight games, averaging 79.6 points during that span. Sophomore guard Miles Coleman leads a balanced Panthers’ offense at 15.4 points per game, while senior forward Jordan Gonzalez is averaging 8.3 rebounds per contest. With a win Friday, Dwyer would play Saturday against the winner of Coral Springs Charter vs. Strong Vincent (Erie, Pa.)

No. 2 Wellington (7-1) vs. Sarasota-Riverview (9-1) at Fort Myers, 4:15 p.m. Saturday: This City of Palms Tournament contest features the state’s top-ranked teams in Class 8A. The Wolverines, who have won seven straight, are ranked No. 1, while the Rams, who lost their first game last week after opening with nine straight wins, are No. 2. Riverview is the third state-ranked team the Wolverines have faced this season, following a Nov. 24 contest against Miami-Norland at American Airlines Arena (a 57-52 loss) and a Dec. 11 home game against Bartow (a 79-75 overtime win). The Wolverines came through in the clutch against Bartow, and hope to carry that momentum into their contest against Riverview. Three Wellington players are averaging double figures in scoring, with Trent Frazier at 20 points per game, Alex Dieudonne at 17.3 and Lester Gates at 11.

Brown, ranked No. 10 on PBgametime’s 2016 Big Board, holds offers from South Alabama, Cincinnati, Colorado State and South Florida, among others.

“We are extremely proud of Da’Von, Gilkes said. “We knew he had tremendous ability as a sophomore, and with all of his hard-work, determination, and commitment, he became not only a great player, but matured into a wonderful young man along the way.

“As a coaching staff, we are proud to see Da’Von continue his dream of playing football.”

Brown finished with more than 600 yards of offense and six touchdowns this season. On defense, he recorded 77 tackles with two interceptions. Both were returned for touchdowns.

Brown is the latest Palm Beach County football standout to commit to FAU.

He joins Oxbridge Academy junior defensive back Traivon Leonard, who committed to the Owls Dec. 2, and American Heritage senior linebacker Lawrence Graham, who announced his commitment to FAU in June.

Barnwell compiled a 14-16 record with the Hawks during his three-year tenure. Seminole Ridge made the playoffs in his first season, advancing to the Class 8A regional quarterfinals in 2013.

The Hawks finished 3-7 overall last season and 2-2 in District 9-8A.

Longtime Seminole Ridge assistant coach James Parson will replace Barnwell. Parson spent nine seasons with the Hawks before taking last year off. He also is the boys and girls weightlifting coach at the school and an assistant athletic director.

Barnwell will remain with the school as its dean of students, Parks said.

“He worked very hard,” Parks said of Barnwell. “We appreciate all the time and effort he put in.”

The Bobcats were one of four South Florida football programs that earned the opportunity to meet NFL football analyst Jon Gruden as part of a “Chalk Talk” program sponsored by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

The schools also received a $1,000 donation from DICK’S, a GoPro Camera, six Wilson game balls, and other training gear to support their program.

Sunday’s 90-minute event, held in Plantation, coincided with the Miami Dolphins’ Monday Night Football game against the New York Giants.

During the session, Gruden spoke with coaches and players from Boca Raton and three schools from Miami-Dade and Broward counties about the lifelong values and positive impact sports offer student-athletes. He also shared his personal perspective about why sports really matter.

“He talked about preparation, film study and leadership,” said Davis, who brought 20 Bobcats players and three assistants to the program. “It was a great event.”

Boca Raton was selected to participate in the Chalk Talk program and receive the $1,000 donation because of its excellence on the field this season, said Kimberly Freedman, DICK’S Sporting Goods Community Marketing Manager.

“With a 9-3 record and the team’s first postseason run since 2009, it’s safe to say Boca Raton High School has an impressive football program,” she said. “Along with Coach Gruden, we appreciate the opportunity to show our support for the Bobcats, and felt this was a great opportunity to do so.”
