West Boca Raton will begin spring football practice next month with a new head coach.

Alphonso ‘Junior’ Moran has stepped down from the position after five seasons with the Bulls.

The Sun-Sentinel was first to report the news Wednesday.

Moran, a 2003 Boca Raton High School graduate and former defensive tackle at Kansas State, compiled a 25-24 record during his tenure.

The Bulls made the regional quarterfinals in 2013 – his first season as head coach.

West Boca Raton finished 4-5 this year.

Moran joined the Bulls’ staff in 2008 as an assistant under head coach Willie Dodaro. In 2013, he was promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach after Dodaro stepped down.

The Bulls went from 3-6 to 7-3 in Moran’s first season, and qualified for the regional playoffs. He was named the Sam Budnyk Coach of the Year after the season.

“He did a fantastic job in the five years he was here,” West Boca Raton athletic director Joe Nappi said.

Moran plans to continue teaching at the school.

A coaching search is underway, Nappi said Thursday.
