The American Heritage boys volleyball team paid tribute to the victims of the Feb. 14 attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last Wednesday prior to its season opener.
On the same day Douglas students returned to school following last month’s tragedy, Stallions’ players, coaches and alumni showed their support by holding a pre-game ceremony on the court.

The team, along with 2015 girls volleyball captain Chelsea Castillo, 2016 captain Emily Burbank and members of the 2017 and 2018 varsity and JV girls teams, placed 17 volleyballs center court at the start of the game.
Athletes then formed one half of a wing to symbolize an Eagle, which is the Stoneman Douglas mascot.
“It was an emotional moment, having 17 students standing there representing those who lost their lives,” head coach Tricia Couch said. “We nearly ran out of room on the court.”
Prior to the game, American Heritage players wore maroon warmup shirt reading #MSDStrong, with a No. 17 on the sleeve.
“We are playing for those who can’t,” team captain Logan Fenimore said. “The Eagles will soar again, and AHS volleyball will be there to help them.”
