In the wake of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland, the Broward County Athletic Association is attempting to postpone all of Wednesday county games involving Broward County public schools, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Some of those games involve Palm Beach County teams.
In boys soccer, Forest Hill will still host Hollywood-South Broward in the regional finals, according to coach Ryan Wells.
In boys basketball, several local teams were scheduled to play in district tournament games against or hosted by Broward County private schools. The BCAA does not include all Broward County private schools, so the decision will likely fall to the individual schools.
Coconut Creek-North Broward Prep announced its boys basketball district games will be postponed till Friday; St. Andrew’s and Saint John Paul II Academy were slated to play tonight.
The District 5-4A boys basketball tournament, which is being played at Fort Lauderdale-Westminster Academy, has not been postponed, according to Benjamin coach Brandon Arnette.
The first of two semifinals, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today, already has tipped off. The second game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The District 7-2A tournament, which is being hosted by Grandview Prep, is scheduled to continue Friday. That district also features Broward County teams.
Grandview Prep coach Joe Dawson said he hadn’t heard of any changes to the schedule.
The District 7-3A tournament, featuring Palm Beach County and Broward County teams, is scheduled to resume Friday at Pompano Beach-Highlands Christian Academy.
Village Academy holds the top seed in that district, and is scheduled to play its semifinal game Friday.
“I haven’t spoken to any other coaches,” Tigers coach Terrence Atkinson said. “But when something like this happens, it puts life in perspective. We are coaching a game that can be rescheduled and made up. But there’s no coming back from loss of life.”
