Micah Mays is stepping aside from the football field in order to take over the athletic department at his alma mater.

The Lake Worth football coach has resigned that position in order to become the athletic director at Palm Beach Lakes, he confirmed Monday.

He’ll begin his new role in January.

“I want to get into administration,” said Mays, who had been teaching, coaching football and serving as an assistant athletic director at Lake Worth.

“To have that opportunity as a visitor comes once in lifetime, and now I have the opportunity to be a TOSA (Teacher on Special Assignment) to get the admin experience, and still deal with athletics from an AD perspective. It’s the best of both worlds.”

Mays coached the Trojans’ football team for two seasons, compiling an overall record of 4-14 after taking over from Jessie Hester in January 2016.

Lake Worth struggled to an 0-9 finish this season.

Mays played quarterback at Palm Beach Lakes before graduating in 1997. He went on to play college football at Grambling State.

Mays was a football assistant with the Rams for six seasons before being named the head coach at Suncoast in 2010. He spent one season with the Chargers, finishing 2-8 but earning a playoff berth.

Mays takes over the athletic director role at Palm Beach Lakes from Keith Marshall, who will become a TOSA/athletic director at Palm Beach Lakes, Mays said.
