A quarterback, a wide receiver and a trio of running backs were selected as finalists for the Lou Groza Awards High School Player of the Year Monday.
Suncoast quarterback Matt Dame, Oxbridge Academy running back Travis Homer, Atlantic running back Shawndarrius Phillips, American Heritage running back Devin Singletary and Wellington wide receiver Ahmmon Richards will compete for the Groza High School Player of the Year Award, which recognizes Palm Beach County’s top high school player.
All five finalists have led their teams to post-season berths, with Suncoast, Atlantic and Oxbridge clinching district championships, and Wellington and American Heritage finishing as district runners-up.
In addition to Player of the Year, three other local awards will be handed out Dec. 7 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. The awards are presented by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
Pahokee’s Ezekiel Hernandez, Palm Beach Gardens’ Ricky Rais, Oxbridge Academy’s Noah Singer, Wellington’s Logan Robinson and Dwyer’s Patrick Trepcos will compete for High School Place-Kicker of the Year; Dwyer’s Jack Daniels, Boca Raton’s Eric Davis, Atlantic’s TJ Jackson, Pahokee’s Alphonso Smith and Oxbridge Academy’s Doug Socha are finalists for the Sam Budnyk High School Head Coach of the Year Award; and Atlantic, Boca Raton, Dwyer, Oxbridge Academy and Pahokee are finalists for High School Team of the Year.
