A last-minute flurry of recruiting activity has ended for Spanish River defensive end/tight end Ryan Veingrad.

The senior plans to sign with Michigan Wednesday as a preferred walk-on, Sharks coach Bill Ceasar confirmed. Veingrad visited the school last weekend.

Wolverines’ coaches, though not head coach Jim Harbaugh, visited with Veingrad twice during the past month, Ceasar said.

The school is recruiting him as a tight end.

Veingrad also has drawn interest from a handful of schools in recent days, among them Wagner, Elon, Eastern Kentucky and Akron.

His trip to Michigan went well, according to Ceasar.

“He said it was the best choice for him,” Ceasar said of Veingrad, who battled cancer as a sophomore but returned to play his final two seasons with the Sharks.

“He loved the visit, he liked the way they treated him. Everything went great. He’ll have an opportunity to get a full ride after this year, and he’ll get an opportunity to compete.”

Veingrad, who is 6-foot-3, bulked up from 185 pounds during his cancer treatment to 235 this season. He’s now up to 255.

Michigan coaches “have seen his work ethic,” Ceasar said. “They feel like he can grow into something special.”

Veingrad will sign at noon Wednesday in Spanish River’s media center. He’ll be joined by senior athlete Dimitrius Hirsch, who plans to sign with Ave Maria University.
