Spring football began Monday, and so did the Florida High School Athletic Association’s ‘Name The Tradition’ campaign.

The three week-long promotion to rename the state football championships invites the public to submit names on the FHSAA website.

By visiting fhsaa.org and clicking on the ‘Name the Tradition’ link, fans will have the opportunity to submit entries through May 3, when the list will be narrowed to six finalists by a blue ribbon prep-sports media committee.

When submitting entries, participants should avoid any names that reference a specific city or host location. All entries must be less than five words, and 35 total characters.

The FHSAA will announce the finalists online May 10. Voters then have four days to vote for their favorite name during the earlier playoff rounds as well as championship games. Winners will be announced May 16.

“The previous ‘Road to Orlando’ campaign has served us well for several years, but we felt like it was time to choose a name that will represent the excitement surrounding our football state championships for many years to come,” FHSAA Executive Director Roger Dearing said in a statement.

“This championship belongs to the teams and fans, so it is important that they have the opportunity to choose a name that reflects the passion they have for high school football throughout Florida.”
