Spanish River High School in Boca Raton is less than 17 miles from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

There are many connections between the schools, both on the athletic fields and off.

After last week’s tragedy in which a former Stoneman Douglas student shot and killed 17 people at the school and injured many more, the Sharks’ boys varsity lacrosse team is stepping up to help its neighbors.

The team approached coach John Trama and proposed a way to help the Douglas families affected by the tragedy.

They decided that selling #StonemanStrong T-shirts was the best way to accomplish that.

“I am so proud of these young men,” Trama said. “Their immediate thoughts were, ‘what can we do to help?”

The team is taking orders for #StonemanStrong T-shirts, with all the profits from their sale going to families that lost a loved one last Wednesday.

Shirts are $20. For more information or to place an order, click here. The fundraiser will be ongoing, and other Boca Raton schools have gotten involved.

“It’s not just about me and my guys,” Trama said. “The whole Boca community is coming together in support. Crosstown rivalries are being put aside in our effort to help our neighbors to the south.

“The lacrosse community is a very tight-knit group, and we always come out and support each other in any way possible.”

Spanish River’s boys lacrosse team will travel to Parkland April 2 to take on Stoneman Douglas.

During warmups, the Sharks will wear the “StonemanStrong T-shirts to honor all the students, teachers and families in the Parkland/Coral Springs community.
