Four-star Oxbridge Academy defensive back C.J. Smith has committed to Florida, he announced via Twitter Tuesday.

Smith, who is rated the nation’s No. 17 safety and the No. 40 prospect in the Class of 2018 by 247Sports Composite, chose the Gators over Michigan, Alabama and Louisville, among others.

“It’s close to home,” Smith told 247Sports in a story posted earlier Tuesday. “It’s family oriented. And it’s great education wise.”

Smith, 6-foot-2 and 193 pounds, visited UF twice this spring. He was recruited to Florida by running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider, a former Glades Central quarterback who recently was inducted into the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame.

“Coach Ja’Juan told me he was coming to Gainesville when he left West Virginia and told me he was coming after me,” Smith said. “He recruited me real hard. Props up to coach Ja’Jaun. He did an amazing job.”

Smith played wide receiver and safety for the ThunderWolves last season, and was named to the Post’s All-Area Small Schools Offense second team.

He’s recorded 10 interceptions during the past two seasons.
