Competitive cheerleading: Area teams among top finishers at state tournament

More than a half-dozen area teams earned top-six finishes at the Florida High School Competitive Cheerleading State Championships in Gainesville.

The competition was held last weekend at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida.

Wellington won the state championship in the Class 2A medium non-tumbling division with a score of 70.70. Ocoee was second with 63.50 points, followed by Longwood-Lyman (63.00) and Southwest Ranches-Archbishop McCarthy.

A trio of area schools earned second-place finishes, with Jupiter finishing as runner-up in the Class 2A medium tumbling division.

The runner-up finish was the Warriors’ third straight in that division. Jupiter finished with 86.70 points, just behind champion Winter Park (87.75). It was the highest score the Warriors have received in the state finals.

King’s Academy also placed second in its division, earning 73.8 points in the Class 1A medium non-tumbling division. West Nassau was first with 74.10 points.

Seminole Ridge earned a runner-up finish in the Class 2A small coed division with 74.20 points. Strawberry Crest was first with 83.20 points.

Other top performances by area schools included: Suncoast – fifth, Class 1A large non-tumbling division; Boca Raton – sixth, Class 2A large tumbling division; West Boca Raton – sixth, Class 2A small tumbling division.

Jupiter, Wellington and Suncoast are scheduled to compete in separate divisions at the National High School Competitive Cheerleading Championships Feb. 11-12 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando.
