Pahokee’s Amari Spirvey, Ja’Kyler Washington, Lon’teria McFadden and India Shepherd were selected by a group of former NBA players to participate in a girl’s All-Star camp that begins today and runs through Aug. 5.
All four compete with the Blue Devils’ girls varsity basketball team.
Glades Central’s Willie Canty, Dejuan Miller and Jamar McClain; and Pahokee’s Thometrius Moore, were chosen by the same group of former NBA players to participate in a boy’s All-Star camp Aug. 8-12.
The girls will be accompanied by Carla Starling of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. The boys will be accompanied by Glades Central basketball coach Kenneth Torrence, who also is a Police Athletic League deputy with PBSO.
All of their travel expenses will be covered by the Palm Beach County Police Athletic League and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Foundation.
In June, the BallStars Youth Camp made a stop at Glades Central. Ball Stars is led by former NBA All-Stars Otis Birdsong and Micheal Ray Richardson. Besides basketball, the camp promotes teamwork, leadership and respect, and also teaches life skills.
During the camp, the eight players were invited to join other student-athletes from around the country at the All-Star camp in New Jersey.
